Petra constantly catches me off guard. She’s picking up how text works…already. She’ll point to a word and ask what it says, and then point to the next word and ask what it says. Getting that words are discrete chunks of text is a big deal, for those who don’t know much about literacy.
She’s in a phase where she asks me to write down different words for her. Silas went through this phase, too, at around the same age. Petra surprised me, though, today. She asked me to write “Silas,” and I did. Then she pointed to the S’s and said, “Oh, him has a big one and a small one. At the beginning and end.” !!!!
For those who haven’t been studying emerging literacy for fifteen years, this might not be a huge deal, but trust me. Huge deal.
